The First Snow
The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently, all day long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows(a field with grass and often wild flowers in it), on the roofs(the covering that forms the top of a building, vehicle, etc) of the living, on the graves of the dead!
All white save the river, that marked its course by a winding(If a road, path, or river winds, it follows a route that turns repeatedly in different directions) black line across the landscape, and the leafless trees, that against the leaden(dark grey) sky now revealed(to make known or show something that is surprising or that was previously secret) more fully the wonderful beauty and intricacy(complicated details) of their branches!
What silence, too, came with the snow, and what seclusion(the state of being alone, away from other people)!
Every sound was muffled(A muffled sound is quiet or not clear), every noise changed to something soft and musical.
No more trampling(to step heavily on or crush someone or something) hoofs(the hard part on the bottom of the feet of animals such as horses, sheep, and deer), no more rattling(a wooden device that when turned round and round produces a noise like a series of knocks) wheels! Only the chiming(a ringing sound) of sleigh(a type of sledge pulled by animals, especially horses or dogs)-bells, beating as swift(happening or moving quickly or within a short time, especially in a smooth and easy way) and merrily(showing happiness or enjoyment) as the hearts of children.
